Friendly pregnancy syndrome that affects husbands
In the movie Junior (1994), Arnold Schwarzenegger plays a man who contains like most women. If events in the real world, such strangeness will certainly make a scene. However, this does not mean that a man has no problems and has no relationship with his partner's pregnancy.
When his wife was pregnant, Hendrikus Rama (32) was among those who followed his desires.
Hendrik bought for four consecutive days his curiosity for meatballs. The syndrome occurs when the gestational age of the woman begins between seven and eight months of gestation.
"At that time, I wanted meatballs for 4 days," Hendrik told Tirto.
In an article in The Conversation, Arthur Brennan, Senior Instructor for Psychology, Research Methods and Statistics at the University of Kingston, explained that the couvade was a manifestation of unintended pregnancy in humans when the partner is pregnant .
This disorder is not a medically recognized medical or mental disorder. In her writings, Brennan recounts the experience of Harry Ashby, a 29-year-old security guard who was expelled from work due to morning sickness, cravings, stomach and enlarged breasts when his small friend is pregnant.
Brennan said that people who experience a sympathetic pregnancy report not only physical symptoms such as abdominal pain and bloating, back pain, pseudocyesis (false pregnancy), lethargy, morning sickness, toothache, and cravings. However, they also have psychological symptoms such as prenatal depression and mood swings, too early emergence, anxiety, decreased concentration, confusion and memory loss.
Brennan suspects that the phenomenon stems from the resolution of the subconscious mind that appears to the couple when the woman is pregnant, but may also indicate an empathic identification with the partner.
At present, various studies on sympathetic pregnancy syndrome are emerging. One of Mander's critics in his book is a study entitled "Future Fathers' Attitudes to Pregnancy" by S. Grace Thomas and Dominic Upton (2013, PDF). In this study, Thomas and Upton distributed questionnaires to 141 fathers, aged 16 to 51, and the average age of respondents was 29.5 years.
In this study, Thomas and Upton noted that 114 respondents were workers and the others were not working. Respondents were divided into three social groups, namely the upper class (28 people), the middle class (41 people), the lower class (49 people) and the remaining 23 people did not disclose their work in detail.
Thomas and Upton also classify pregnancy planning. A total of 89 respondents had a planned pregnancy and 51 people said they did not plan to have a pregnancy. none of the men expressed dissatisfaction with his wife's pregnancy. However, seven people had doubts about the pregnancy of his wife.
"At that time, I wanted meatballs for 4 days," Hendrik told Tirto.
Can men experience the same symptoms as those experienced by pregnant couples?
Hendrik's experience can be experienced by other potential fathers. This phenomenon is called couvade syndrome or sympathetic pregnancy. The name is originally born from an old French verb, hatching, which means covering the nest of eggs to help them hatch in chicks. In an article in The Conversation, Arthur Brennan, Senior Instructor for Psychology, Research Methods and Statistics at the University of Kingston, explained that the couvade was a manifestation of unintended pregnancy in humans when the partner is pregnant .
